Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu’s relationship (fictitious stories 15)

Zhou Yu
Ciu Ji

In the novel, Zhou Yu was portrayed as an ambitious and scheming, but brilliant military commander and fine connoisseur of the arts who was envious of Zhuge Liang’s talents and often sought to kill Zhuge Liang but has always failed. In historical records however, Zhou Yu was not as narrow-hearted and scheming as he was in the novel. The story of Zhuge Liang infuriating Zhou Yu thrice and causing the latter’s death was also entirely fictional. In fact, Zhou Yu had died before embarking on the campaign for Western Shu in Baqiu (巴丘) and he had not met Zhuge Liang during the period of time between the Battle of Red Cliffs and his deaths. However, Zhou Yu did attempt to have Liu Bei assassinated as in the novel, but his plan was foiled by Zhuge Liang.
