Sun Shang Xiang an Liu Bei
In the novel, Sun Quan followed Zhou Yu’s Beauty Strategy (美人計) by luring Liu Bei to Wu under the pretence of marrying his younger sister, which was in fact a ploy to take Liu Bei hostage in exchange for Jing province (荊州). Zhuge Liang foiled Zhou Yu’s plan again, which concluded with Liu Bei really marrying Lady Sun, who truly loved him, and leaving Wu safely with his newly wed wife. Also, after Liu Bei’s death, it was said that Lady Sun threw herself into the river to follow her husband. In history, the marriage between Liu Bei and Lady Sun was simply a political marriage to strengthen ties between Liu Bei and Sun Quan, without all the deception and love themes involved at all. Also, there were no records of Lady Sun throwing herself into the river after her husband’s death.
