Battle Of Red Cliff
In the novel, Guan Yu was despatched to guard Huarong Pass and intercept the retreating troops of Cao Cao after the latter’s defeat at the Battle of Red Cliffs. Guan Yu did encounter Cao Cao, whom he was supposed to capture and bring back to his lord Liu Bei. However, Guan Yu decided to spare Cao Cao on account of their past dealings and allowed Cao Cao to pass through with his remaining soldiers unharmed. This story is entirely fictional, but Liu Bei did send troops to pursue Cao Cao after the latter’s defeat but arrived too late and Cao Cao had already escaped.
