In the novel, Guan Yu was taken by surprise by the sudden backstab by the forces of Eastern Wu which caused him to lose Jing province (荊州) after his major victory against the armies of Wei. He was forced to retreat to Maicheng (麥城) where he refused to surrender despite being heavily besieged by the Wu troops. He attempted to break out of the siege but fell into an ambush and was captured by Pan Zhang. In historical records, there was no mention of Guan Yu’s refusal to surrender and there were indications that Guan Yu had attempted to break out of the siege by feigning surrender. Also, Guan Yu was captured by Ma Zhong who was Pan Zhang’s subordinate.
