In the novel, the southern barbarian king Meng Huo rebelled against the Kingdom of Shu. The Prime Minister of Shu Zhuge Liang led an army forth to pacify the southern barbarian tribes. Meng Huo was captured and released seven times, as after each of the first six times, he argued that he was dissatisfied and wanted to have another trial of strength with Zhuge Liang again. After the seventh time, Meng Huo felt ashamed of himself and he swore allegiance to Shu forever. These events were not mentioned in Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms although it did mention something about ‘capture and release seven times’, but not in detail. The characters such as E Huan (鄂煥), Lady Zhurong, Meng You and King Mulu (木鹿大王) were most likely to be fictional ones.
