In the novel, Yuan Shao’s army led by Yan Liang and Wen Chou attacked Cao Cao’s fortress at Baima (白馬). Some of the best warriors who served Cao Cao, such as Xu Huang, went to challenge Yan Liang but were defeated. Eventually, Cao Cao agreed to allow Guan Yu to challenge Yan Liang reluctantly and Guan Yu slew Yan Liang easily. Later, Wen Chou challenged Cao Cao’s army to avenge Yan Liang but was also slain by Guan Yu. In historical records, Yan Liang was indeed slain by Guan Yu but Wen Chou’s death at the hands of Guan Yu was disputed as it was mentioned in historical records that Wen Chou was killed in battle without mentioning by whose hand.
