In the novel, Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei fought with the so-called ‘invincible’ Lü Bu who had defeated several warriors of the coalition army. This battle had made the trio famous as Lü Bu could not defeat them and was forced to retreat. In historical records, however, Gongsun Zan whom Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were under the service of, did not participate in the punitive campaign against Dong Zhuo. Rather, Lü Bu was defeated in battle by Sun Jian and was forced to retreat.
