In the novel, Cao Cao borrowed the Seven Stars Precious Sword (七星寶刀) from Wang Yun and attempted to assassinate Dong Zhuo with it, but Dong Zhuo noticed Cao Cao drawing his sword through a reflection in the mirror. Cao Cao sensed that something had gone wrong so he immediately knelt down and pretended to present the sword to Dong Zhuo. Shortly after that, Cao Cao made his escape. In historical records, Cao Cao left Dong Zhuo’s service after realising that Dong Zhuo was doomed to fall for his tyranny and he fled back to his hometown overnight.
