Guan Yu’s three agreements (fictitious stories 8)

Guan Yu

Cao Cao led his army to attack Xu province (徐州) after Liu Bei seized it from Che Zhou (車冑). The three sworn brothers were separated in the battle. Guan Yu stayed back to guard Xu province where Liu Bei’s spouses where, but was lured out of the city by Cao Cao’s ruse. Guan Yu was heavily besieged on a small hill outside the city and Cao Cao sent Zhang Liao to ask Guan Yu to surrender. Guan Yu agreed to surrender if three conditions were fulfilled; 1. Liu Bei’s spouses must not be harmed and well taken care of, 2. Guan Yu surrenders to the Emperor and not Cao Cao, 3. Guan Yu will go and reunite with Liu Bei when he knows of the latter’s whereabouts. In historical records, Guan Yu was captured in battle and he simply decided to surrender and serve Cao Cao temporarily.
